EU Could Retaliate to ‘Unwarranted’ US Visa Bans, Spokesperson Says

The EU might “respond swiftly and decisively” against what it calls “unwarranted” travel bans issued by the United States against five European individuals working on combating digital hatred and misinformation, a European Commission spokesperson stated.

EU Officials Condemn US Action as ‘Coercion’

Officials from Europe such as the French president accused the US administration of “coercion and intimidation”, following the visa restrictions were placed on individuals that were central to campaigns to introduce laws governing American tech companies.

“For far too long, European activists have led organised efforts to pressure US companies to suppress US perspectives they disagree with,” stated the US secretary of state online. “The current administration will not stand for such actions of extraterritorial censorship.”

Broad Criticism From EU Nations

Nations including Germany, Spain, and the UK, alongside numerous EU representatives supported the French president in criticizing the move.

The restrictions were enacted this week on a former EU commissioner involved in crafting the bloc’s digital governance law, as well as four anti-disinformation campaigners, including two in Germany and two in the UK.

An Escalating Conflict Over Regulation

The DSA is seen by US officials as a type of speech restriction, whereas European leaders argue the rules are necessary to control inflammatory language and falsehoods.

This disagreement threatens to become part of a far wider ongoing cultural and political conflict between Washington and European institutions.
