US Justice Department Joins Lawsuit to Block the State of California's Congressional Map
The US Justice Department has entered the fray in a legal challenge brought forward by California Republicans, seeking to prevent the California's newly approved electoral boundaries.
This court case, submitted to a US district court, targets the redistricting plan supported by Governor Gavin Newsom, which was created in response to a Republican-led gerrymander in Texas.
"The state's electoral map represents a blatant attempt to seize control that tramples on civil rights and undermines the democratic process," stated the US attorney general.
The Democratic party have voiced assurance that the redistricting plan will withstand legal scrutiny.
"The plaintiffs lost at the ballot box and soon they will also lose in court," stated a spokesperson for Governor Newsom.
Legal Basis
The legal challenge claims that California's map wrongfully utilized race as a factor to heavily favor Hispanic voters in contravention of the US Constitution.
"It is unconstitutional to use race as a substitute to further partisan goals, but that is precisely what the California General Assembly did with Proposition 50," argued a senior official from the DOJ's civil rights unit.
Political Context
The legal battle represents the most significant counterpunch by the Democratic party in the ongoing political battle that started with Texas and has extended to various parts of the country.
In contrast to elsewhere, where GOP-controlled legislatures have implemented partisan maps, California's plan required public consent, which it obtained with approximately two-thirds of the vote.
National Implications
The Democratic party need to gain just a small number of Republican-held House seats to gain majority of the House of Representatives in next year's congressional elections.
The political group controlling the majority will shape the final years of the current administration, deciding if a GOP-controlled legislature will continue to deliver its agenda or encounter opposition, congressional probes and possible further challenges.
