World Health Organization Issues Concern Over Critical Scarcity of Obesity Medications

Less than 10% of patients who could benefit from obesity jabs like Wegovy are able to get them, caution the global health agency as it releases its initial advice on the medications.

With in excess of 1,000,000,000 individuals worldwide now obese, it is calling for more widespread and fairer availability to these injectable treatments.

According to forecasts, more than two billion could be obese by 2030 without intervention.

"The new guidelines acknowledges that obesity is a long-term condition that can be treated with comprehensive and continuous care," remarked the agency's head Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus.

Significant expense, constrained manufacturing, and distribution challenges are key obstacles to widespread availability to the treatments that can help people shift substantial weight, explains the organization.

Weight-Loss Drug Scarcity

Despite the present most favorable outlook, the manufacturing of these medications would only suffice for approximately 100 million people – under 10% of eligible patients, according to the health organization.

The guideline urges governments and firms to widen availability, through strategies like patent sharing.

A patent on the active ingredient – the primary component of a leading brand – is scheduled to end in several countries in 2026.

The Way Weight-Loss Jabs Operate

GLP-1 drugs mimick a biological compound to delay gastric emptying, reduce hunger and boost feelings of fullness so people eat less.

People usually see weight reduction after several weeks of beginning the regular doses.

Evidence suggests users may see weight return after a year of discontinuing the drug, when their usual appetite resume.

To be overweight or obese elevates your risk for developing medical conditions, like type 2 diabetes, cardiovascular issues, brain attack, and some cancers.

Obesity concerns people in every country and was responsible for 3.7 million fatalities worldwide in 2024, as per the WHO.
